Zintgraff Studio — the San Antonio commercial photography studio of James W. (“Jas. W.”) Zintgraff, at 131 Isabel Street (telephone Kenwood 6), per the studio stamp on the reverse of a print in the 2018 H&H photo lot (HH-COLL-2018-0005). The studio’s confirmed Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Company work is the “In Step with N.R.A.” 1933 employee group on the factory steps (HH-COLL-2018-0004, whose ~50 staff are named in a surviving parade key — the print that bears the Zintgraff stamp) and factory-interior photographs of the Master Chef canning line at 601 Delaware Street. (The “Fragrant…” billboard group photo from the same 2018 lot was formerly credited to Zintgraff but is now identified as the Sept. 14, 1929 left half of a Summerville Photo panorama — HH-COLL-2018-0003; the Zintgraff stamp in the lot is on the N.R.A. print, not the billboard print.)

The “Fragrant…” billboard group photo (now attributed to Summerville Photo, not Zintgraff — see HH-COLL-2018-0003) carries no painter attribution for the billboard; the company record labels the billboard painter as an “unconfirmed attribution,” with Silas P. Stevens the candidate painter of H&H billboards.

Open questions

  • The “Fragrant…” billboard painter is unconfirmed. (The 1929 billboard group photo is now attributed to Summerville Photo, not Zintgraff, so Zintgraff’s studio records are no longer the obvious lead for the billboard’s painter.)
