McCormick–McClung wedding — Albert G. Menger uncle of bride — SA Express-News, 8 June 1969
Society “Wedding Announcements” column item in the San Antonio Express-News of Sunday, 8 June 1969 (p. 74) for the McCormick-McClung wedding: Miss Mary Kathleen McClung married James Franklin McCormick on Saturday in St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Rev. Adolph Windisch officiating. Portrait of the bride (Mrs. J. F. McCormick) appears at right.
Family identification:
- Albert G. Menger, uncle of the bride, served as lector of the Mass. This is a primary-source attestation of an “uncle” family-relationship between Albert G. Menger (then-recent former H&H Coffee Co. president) and the McClung family — specifically the bride Mary Kathleen McClung, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy La Monte McClung Jr.
- The bride’s mother is therefore one of Albert G. Menger’s sisters (or, less commonly, Albert’s wife Lemoyne Flaherty was a McClung). Theodore J. Menger’s 1987 obituary lists Rose Marie McClung of Round Rock as a niece — so Rose Marie McClung is one of Albert’s nieces and a Menger-family cousin to Mary Kathleen McClung; this 1969 wedding likely involves the same McClung branch. Notably Rose Marie McClung appears here as one of the bride’s bridesmaids (“sisters of the bride” — so Mary Kathleen, Rose Marie, and Mary Margaret McClung are all sisters and all nieces of Albert G. Menger).
- Cross-references: Gus P. Menger’s 1974 obituary names “Mrs. Rose Marie McClung, Houston” as a daughter (so the McClung connection comes from one of Gus P. Menger’s daughters marrying a McClung). The Menger–McClung family tie thus traces: Gus P. Menger → daughter → Guy La Monte McClung Jr. (marriage) → Mary Kathleen, Rose Marie (b), Mary Margaret, and others. Albert G. Menger (uncle to the McClung daughters) is therefore brother to Mrs. Guy La Monte McClung Jr. — one of Gus P. Menger’s daughters.
This is the cleanest dated family-network attestation in the corpus identifying the Menger–McClung line, supplementing the names that appear in the 1974 and 1987 obituaries of Gus P. and Theodore J. Menger.
Additional named wedding-party members:
- Samuel McClung (brother of the bride) and Mark Fisher — altar boys.
- Joan Ruth McClung — bride’s sister, maid of honor.
- Bridesmaids sisters of the bride: Rose Marie McClung and Mary Margaret McClung, plus Miss Milagros Maldonado.
- Paul R. LaPlante — best man. Guy La Monte McClung III (brother of the bride), Ernest Herrera, Allan Cusack — groomsmen. Francis Moczygemba, Bruce Reinhardt, Wayne Cusack — ushers.
- Groom’s parents: Mr. and Mrs. James Chester McCormick.
A second wedding item (“Turnbough-Taylor”) shares the column but is unrelated to the Menger family.
