Albert G. Menger

Albert G. Menger (born c. 1917–1918, San Antonio; died February 1994). Son of Gustav P. Menger and Rose Lee Crowther Menger. Elected President of Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Company on 4 May 1960, succeeding his father, who stepped up to a newly-created Board Chairman role.

Background and entry

Graduate of St. Mary’s University, San Antonio. After graduation served five years in the U.S. Air Force. Joined Hoffmann-Hayman in 1945, serving for 15 years before his election as president. Prior to May 1960 he held the role of Secretary (documented September 1959). Residence: 206 Robinhood, San Antonio. Wife: Lemoyne; children: Ruth, Barbara, Lemoyne.

Gus P. Menger, announcing the succession: “I am indeed proud that our directors have given the responsibility for leadership as president of this long-established San Antonio industry to my son, Albert.”

At H&H

As president, Albert oversaw the later Master Chef and H and H Coffee years through the Continental Coffee Company acquisition in 1962 — about 2 years after his elevation. Primary source: the 2 April 1987 Express-News feature on his uncle Theodore J. Menger, which records: “He remained there until 1962, when the company was sold to Continental Coffee of Chicago.” This confirms both the 1962 acquisition year and the Chicago-based parent. Continental operated H&H at 601 Delaware through at least 1975. Albert is named as a nephew-survivor in the 1987 obituary and feature.
