San Antonio Express-News — MENGER obituary for Edward William Menger, 78, 11 November 1960, p. 23

Obituary for Edward William Menger, 78, of 222 Primrose, who died Thursday, November 10, 1960 — printed in the San Antonio Express-News of Friday, 11 November 1960, p. 23. The notice anchors several Menger-family and H&H Coffee Co. facts that recur across the family’s later obituaries:

  • Sibling enumeration: sister Miss Margaret Menger; brothers August, Louis B., Gus P., Rudolph W., and Theodore J. Menger — seven Menger siblings still living in San Antonio at the end of 1960 (counting Edward and Margaret). Theodore J. Menger’s 1987 obituary names eight children total.
  • S.A.M.S.CO. career: “one of the oldest members of the Quarter Century Club of S.A.M.S.CO., having been employed there continually for over 50 years.” The corporate entity behind the S.A.M.S.CO. acronym still needs follow-up identification.
  • H&H Coffee Co.: “Retired two years and Stockholder in the H&H Coffee Co.” — confirms a Menger-family stockholding interest in H&H about 18 months before the 1962 sale to Continental Coffee of Chicago.
  • Pallbearers include Albert G. Menger (H&H president by May 1960) and John C. Burkholder (later named a director). Funeral arrangements by Zizik-Kearns-Downing — the same funeral home used by the family for later Menger deaths.
