From the San Antonio Light Photograph Collection at UTSA (item cataloged circa 18 June 1948), a press shot of Gus P. Menger and his son Albert cupping at Hoffmann–Hayman. The finding aid and aggregated metadata (e.g. on DPLA) still describe Gus as the company’s lead taster of many years, training Albert, with tasting volumes and Latin American origins noted in the record.

Gus P. Menger and son Albert testing coffee — UTSA San Antonio Light Collection

Gus P. Menger (right) and Albert Menger (left) at a round tasting table in the plant. Sample boxes, cupping glasses, and spoons are laid out between them; in the background, two tall H AND H COFFEE urns line the wall beside a “Scobey Fireproof Storage” card. Gus, older with glasses, lifts a cupping spoon; Albert, in a checkered short-sleeve shirt, leans in to the same work.
