Crystalvac Jar with Butter-Churn Attachment

less than 1 minute read

A large square-base Crystalvac jar repurposed as the body of a hand-crank butter churn. The jar itself is a standard Owens-Illinois-era Crystalvac with the familiar “Crystalvac” script and “CONTAINER” embossing faintly readable on the base, carrying a wire bail handle at the neck. Clamped onto the jar mouth is the churn mechanism: a cast-iron frame with a large geared wheel, a pinion, and a wooden crank handle on one side; a vertical steel shaft drops through the lid to a four-blade wooden dasher turning inside the jar. This kind of attachment was sold separately and designed to fit onto standard wide-mouth jars of the period — a reminder that Crystalvacs were utility glass first, coffee packaging second, and ended up drafted into plenty of second-life household jobs.
