H and H Coffee

Dedicated to the history of the Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Co. est. 1899 in San Antonio, Texas.

The corporate terminus of the Master Chef coffee mark and the far end of the Hoffmann-Hayman → Continental → Massimo Zanetti brand chain. Massimo Zanetti Beverage Group is a privately held Italian coffee company — founded 1973, headquartered in Bologna — whose US arm, Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA, holds the live MASTER CHEF trademark (Reg. 2366913) and roasts the current-production Master Chef can documented in the collection. It is why a Master Chef revival at 601 Delaware is blocked.

The group

Massimo Zanetti built the firm from the 1970s after moving to Bologna and acquiring the historic producer Segafredo. Wikipedia describes it as “the biggest private company in the coffee industry,” with roughly US$1.2 billion annual turnover: ~120,000 tons of coffee a year, 11 roasting plants, distribution in 100 countries, 600+ Segafredo Zanetti Espresso cafés, and La San Marco espresso equipment. It listed on Borsa Italiana’s STAR segment June 2015 – February 2021, then delisted after a voluntary takeover by MZ Industries S.A.

US brands and the Continental lineage

Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA (HQ Portsmouth, Virginia; roasting plants in Suffolk, VA and Moonachie, NJ; plus the Kauai Coffee farm in Hawaiʻi) holds a portfolio of historic American coffee brands — Chock full o’Nuts, Chase & Sanborn, MJB, Hills Bros., Kauai Coffee — several of them former Continental / Sara Lee-lineage marks. Among them is MASTER CHEF Reg. 2366913 for coffee, the live mark that traces back through Continental to Hoffmann-Hayman.

What this source can and cannot support

The Wikipedia article is thin, largely uncited, and has no History section — it makes no mention of Sara Lee, Continental Coffee, CFS, or Master Chef, and gives no account of how the US arm came to hold the former Continental brands. The H&H → Continental → Massimo Zanetti chain for the Master Chef mark therefore rests on the trademark record (USPTO / Justia), not on this encyclopedia entry, which can neither corroborate nor contradict it. The 1968 → 1998 use gap in the Master Chef lineage stays open; the CFS Holdings, Inc. filing (Serial 76299847) remains the most promising thread. Treat the figures above as orientation only.
