Hoffman Bros & Co., Columbus, Ohio — the namesake that imported
We buy the wrong Hoffmans on purpose.
This one is a cylindrical lithographed tin, about six inches across and four and a half high, with a slip-fit lid seated on a raised collar. The ground is a warm cream, ruled top and bottom in thin blue and closed at the base with a black band. The face is entirely typographic — no vignette, no mascot, no scene. COFFEE runs across it in tall red slab capitals with inline white shading, flanked by small red scrolls, and beneath it, in diminishing red type: IMPORTED BY / HOFFMAN BROS & CO. LTD / COLUMBUS, OHIO.
The lid insert is gone, disclosed in the listing and unsurprising for a canister that plainly finished its working life on a kitchen shelf. The cream ground has picked up scattered dark specking and the base band shows edge wear. The lithography itself has not faded at all.
Why keep it
Because we already had the tea tin.
The collection has held a Hoffman Bros. & Co. tea tin from this same Columbus firm for some time. This canister makes a pair, and a pair says something a single object cannot: Hoffman Bros. was a multi-commodity importing house — coffee and tea both — trading under a name that sits exactly one letter from Hoffmann-Hayman. That is the precise profile that keeps surfacing in newspaper indexes, trademark rolls, and auction listings as a plausible H&H hit. Every time we can put a physical object behind a false positive, the next researcher gets to reject it faster.

The sharpest tell is that IMPORTED BY line. H&H’s entire retail identity was built on the roast — the strapline says so, the plant-modernization coverage says so, the cup-testing publicity says so. A firm that advertises itself as an importer is making a different commercial claim altogether. Hoffman Bros. wasn’t a competitor to H&H so much as a different link in the same trade.
They are not us. That is exactly what makes them worth shelving.
