San Antonio Historic Center Plan
La Villita Expansion Idea Wins — By Ed Ray, Editor.
Chris M. Jasso, 57-year-old coffee company employee, won $50 and first place in a contest sponsored by the Saturday Express and News and the Chamber of Commerce for a plan to expand La Villita into a historic center honoring San Antonio’s Canary Island settlers of 1731. His plan calls for restoration of the Veramendi Mansion, Garza House, and Vance House, a monument to the Canary Islands group, open-air dining patios, a kiosk or bandstand, and parking for 400 cars, with numbered sites keyed on an accompanying map labeled JASSO’S PLAN.
Downtown Walks Developed This Idea — Mrs. C.W. Sullivan won third prize for a separate downtown traffic-and-parks plan (map keyed A–E) developed from her walks through the city center.
