Hoffmann-Hayman trademark applications: empty glass jars and coffee — List of Applicants, 1932
The U.S. Patent Office annual List of Applicants for 1932 (p. 51) records two Hoffmann-Hayman Coffee Co. trademark applications:
| Serial No. | Date Filed | Class | Goods |
|---|---|---|---|
| 327,191 | Aug. 9 | 33 | Empty glass jars |
| 327,979 | Nov. 29 | 46 | Coffee |
Serial No. 327,979 (Class 46, coffee) is the Crystalvac / H AND H BLEND Coffee mark published in the Official Gazette on November 29, 1932 — the filing date shown here is the publication date in the Gazette, not the original application date (which was June 14, 1932).
The second entry — Serial No. 327,191, filed August 9, 1932, Class 33 (empty glass jars) — is a separate trademark application for the Crystalvac jar itself as a container form, independent of the coffee product mark. Registering the container as a trademark was an attempt to protect the distinctive glass jar design from imitation by competitors. Class 33 covered “Cutlery, machinery, and tools, and instruments for use in connection with business.” Whether this application was ultimately granted is not yet confirmed from available sources.
Together the two applications show H&H pursuing parallel intellectual-property protection in summer–fall 1932: the branded mark (Crystalvac wordmark + H AND H BLEND logotype) and the container form itself.
