Sam Houston Brand and Menger Finest Peaberry labels registered — Tea & Coffee Trade Journal, June 1928
The Tea and Coffee Trade Journal for June 1928 (p. 854) carries the weekly “Labels Registered” digest, listing two Hoffmann-Hayman label registrations in the Week Ending May 1, 1928 batch:
- “Sam Houston Brand” — Registration No. 33,914; coffee.
- “Menger Finest Quality Peaberry Coffee Steel Cut” — Registration No. 33,915; coffee.
The Sam Houston Brand is previously documented in San Antonio newspaper advertising from the same era. “Menger Finest Quality Peaberry Coffee Steel Cut” is notable for embedding the family name directly in the brand name — one of very few products H&H marketed under the Menger surname rather than a trade name. “Steel Cut” (also written “steel-cut”) was a premium processing designation for coarsely ground or cracked coffee, commonly used for percolator brewing. Peaberry refers to a single-seed coffee cherry, considered a specialty grade by the trade.
