The Tea and Coffee Trade Journal for May 1928 (p. 725) runs the weekly “Trade Marks Pending” digest from the U.S. Patent Office, showing two Hoffmann-Hayman applications active that spring. O.S.T. “Old Spanish Trail” (Serial No. 261,672) appears in the Week Ending April 3, 1928 section — a coffee mark taking its name from the historic highway linking California to Florida through San Antonio. “San Jose” with design (Serial No. 261,671), in the Week Ending April 10, 1928 section, covers a compound of coffee, cereal and chicory — documenting that H&H marketed a blended cereal-coffee-chicory product under at least one brand name in this period. Both marks were granted by June 1928 (per the Index of Trade-Marks, 1928).

The page also carries mark art for both in the illustrated mosaic at top: the O.S.T. block lettering with state silhouette, and the San Jose design.
